The ‘board butter’ ratio I use on all my products which will come into contact with food is 4 parts mineral oil to 1 part beeswax by volume or weight. This creates a smooth, spreadable paste that deeply penetrates the wood and leaves a water-resistant wax seal.
There are alternative ratios for Different Textures:
- 3:1 Ratio (More Wax): Yields a firmer, thicker paste that provides a slightly stronger surface water barrier.
- 5:1 or 6:1 Ratio (More Oil): Creates a softer, creamier lotion consistency that is very easy to rub deep into dry hardwood.
How to Mix and Apply:
- Mix safely: Use a double boiler or a crockpot on low heat. Never melt beeswax over a direct open flame because it is flammable.
- Combine: Heat 4 parts food-grade mineral oil with 1 part pure beeswax until the wax melts completely, then stir well.
- Pour and cool: Pour the liquid into a tin or glass jar and let it cool undisturbed until it hardens into a salve consistency.
- Apply: Rub the paste onto clean hardwood with a cloth, let it sit for 1 to 2 hours, and buff it off with a dry rag.
